GLOBAL MACROECONOMICS AND BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Need assistance with a report on the Macroeconomic analysis of India.
You are acting as a Consultant Economic Adviser to the government of a country of your own choice. You are required to present the government of that country with a 3,000-word report on the following:
(a) the current state of the economy.
(b) the major challenges and prospects the economy is likely to face over the next five years; and
(c) your policy recommendations relating to these challenges.
Your task is:
(i) to search out appropriate and up-to-date information on the state of the economy; and
(ii) to put forward realistic policy recommendations based on your analysis of the information and necessary to meet the medium-term challenges and opportunities.
Your report must be confined to economic aspects although brief reference to relevant political considerations may be included where appropriate.
The report should be presented with an Executive Summary, Sections (a), (b) and (c) as above, Appendices and References. The three main sections must be given equal priority (in terms of word count).
• You must submit a 3,000-word.
• An Executive Summary must be included and must not exceed 1 page in length (although this will not be counted within the word limit).
• Appendices are also excluded from the word count and must not exceed 5 pages in length.
The report itself must be your own work and if the views of recognised experts are included, they must be acknowledged. The penalty for plagiarism - which includes downloading and direct reproduction from the web - may result in a zero mark for the report and, of course, you will not be offered further consultancy assignments by the government!
Country Report Guidance
Reports must not exceed the 3,000-word limit. As the project is a report to a government its presentation and readability are important so the marks will be divided as follows:
(i) Overall Presentation (including the Executive Summary): 15 per cent
(ii) Current State of the Economy: 25 per cent
(iii) Medium Term Challenges and Prospects: 25 per cent
(iv) Policy Recommendations: 25 per cent
(v) Appendices and Sources of Information: 10 per cent
• Executive Summary
This must be included (maximum of ONE page) but will not be counted in the word limit.
• Current State of the Economy
This should focus on data that are as up to date as possible! We would expect to read a lot about the economy this year even if only estimates are used.
Do not discuss history except as a passing comment to put things in context.
Allocate about 1000 words to this section in total.
All tables and graphs etc. should be included as appendices. Bullet points are acceptable as long as they provide a clear picture of the economy.
We would expect to see commentary on changes in GDP, consumer spending, investment spending, government spending and trade flows. You could also mention inflation, unemployment, the currency and any other macroeconomic variables which are particularly relevant to the economy in recent times. Focus on the dynamics of the key variables - and not absolute values! But remember - you only have a limited number of words!
• Medium Term Challenges and Prospects
This section should also be around 1000 words.
Focus on the most important challenges (perhaps three or four at most) - do not simply list all possible problems which the country faces! These may include issues such as reducing unemployment from a high level, the economic challenges stemming from an aging population, coping with a large and growing trade deficit, large fiscal deficits and national debt problems etc.
With respect to prospects, try to describe the economy in, say, 5 years. Will things be better or worse? Will the challenges be more or less severe? Why? Will the economy struggle to recover or to sustain growth etc.?
Once more, bullet points are acceptable as long as they are not merely a listing of points without any commentary or analysis from you!
• Policy Recommendations
What advice would you give to this country about how these challenges should be tackled?
Focus on economic advice!
Would you raise or lower taxes? Why? Would you focus on demand side or supply side policies? Why? What would be some of the trade-offs concerning your policy recommendations?
There are only about 1000 words remaining to cover this section so be focused - but do not just list all policy options! Better to offer a couple of policy suggestions and justify these.
• Appendices and Sources of Information
Appendices should be a maximum of 5 pages and are excluded from the word count. Do not include any of the slides from the lectures. Include only relevant tables and graphs which you have extracted from data sources or compiled yourself.
The information should be clear and well presented - do not simply include a densely packed table from a data source which will require a magnifying glass to read it! Regard this as a professional report and so present information with the aim of informing, clarifying and impressing the reader.
You should include references to any sources of information that you have used. These will not be part of the word count. Sources should be listed at the end on a separate page.
