At my current workplace, the administrators had attempted to implement a procedure that would allow us to accession our specimens at a faster rate. This procedure involved having one runner who would gather specimens from either the freezer or other accessioners who have the same patient and accessioning papers that goes with that patient. The procedure also involved going from the left hand side of our computers to our right when we accession our specimens. Supposedly, this was to help us increase our accessioning speed and get our specimens out faster. However, there were many problems that arose from trying to attempt to implement this process. First off, this actually led to our accessioning speeds to actually decrease due to us having to wait on specific specimens for the patients we are accessioning. Secondly, this process rely too much on that one individual to find those specific specimens for that patient and having loads of individuals who need those specimens puts more stress on that person. Third issue was that this process disregarded the hospital section due to how different hospital section accessions specimens. Finally, this process does not address the main conflict that was causing us to have backup in our accessioning process. The main issue that was causing us to leave and send our shipments at later times was due to the immense number of specimens coming in from the mountain regions arriving within an hour or two before we are required to ship our specimens to the main branch. This led to us making later shipments, lowered accessioning speeds, and an increase in missing or duplicate specimens. After this mess, we decided to do a hybrid where we would gather the specimens ourselves but have a designated person to collected and sort accessioned specimens into designated locations.
