The American Nurses Association published its aim and standards in 1994-1995 and presented the Nursing Informatics as a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer and information science to provide data communication management, knowledge and nursing work in 2001. (NCBI, 2022) The integration of informatics and nursing allows for improved tracking of the healthcare that is delivered to our patients. It holds employees accountable for the type of care they provide. Nurse informaticists facilitate communication between clinical and IT staff. They speak two languages-technology and health care-and focus specifically on developing strategies for health IT procurement, implementation, maintenance, and optimization in collaboration with other clinical and operational leaders. (ONS, 2022) Clinical IT possess' many outlets one being telehealth. Telehealth is a form of communication technology which include videoconferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless technologies. I feel that when covid transpired it caused healthcare to transform our normal daily healthcare interactions into a "zoom meeting" which is a safer place for the population and healthcare worker. They aren't constantly being exposed to different illness' and risking their lives to care for others. I think this is great in certain aspects but not so beneficial in other areas. How would we obtain objective data like basic vital signs, listening to lung sounds and inspecting our skin, to name a few. Nurses are often on the front lines of ensuring that their patients are kept safe and preventing medication errors, misdiagnoses, falls, and other problems. Health informatics provides important data that can prevent these errors; for example, an electronic record can provide information about a possible dangerous medication interaction or allergy that might not otherwise be immediately apparent. Armed with data, nurses can make quick decisions that keep their patients safe. (Healthstream, 2022). Fewer medical errors improve better patient outcomes and lower mortality rates. I am so grateful for those pop ups I get about overriding certain drugs as well as contraindications for medications. Overall, I am pleased with the direction this is heading towards for employees as well as our communities. I plan to obtain certifications in this subject area to apply myself in the ever so changing medical field.
