Case study: Patricia met her husband, Todd, while he was on vacation in Colombia. After starting relationship, Todd eventually married Patricia and sponsored her to come to Canada. Since coming to Canada three months ago, she has been attending English classes every week at the settlement agency where you work. After getting to know Patricia, she confides in you that her marriage has been a nightmare ever since she arrived. Todd has been controlling her finances (as she is unemployed), keeping immigration documents from her, and only allowing her to attend English classes during the week. Things became worse last week when Todd became physically abusive towards Patricia after she was delayed returning home after class. She is very worried that any action she takes to leave the situation will result in heightened abuse, homelessness and possibly deportation.
