A group leader says "I'll be available each week for the two hours that our group meets, but if you wish to consult with me privately at any time, please feel free to call me." This leader encourages one-to-one sessions, and as a result, members begin saying to him things they are unwilling to say in the group. Further, he guarantees them confidentiality. As a result of this practice, many members do not develop direct communication with each other. Instead of talking with each other about matters that are appropriate group material, they begin to rely on the leader out of group, and what they discuss is typically not brought back into the group. He eventually finds himself burdened and in a bind. His offer to see members outside of group has been abused. Not only is he burdened with many individual sessions, but he sees that the group is really not working as a group.
