A metal matrix composite consists of 6061 Aluminum alloy that is reinforced with carbon fibers. The fibers are arranged in a random 2D mat and are sufficient in length to exceed the critical fiber length for effective stiffening. The elastic moduli for 6061 Al and carbon (high modulus) fibers are 69 GPa and 400 GPa, respectively. Based on this, estimate the volume fraction ofcarbon fibers needed for the composite to achieve an elastic modulus of 105 GPa, measured along a direction parallel to the plane of the fibers.
