A fast food outlet has a drive through window served by a single employee. Customers arrive randomly at a rate of 20 per hour. The service time distribution is exponential with a mean of 2 minutes. A training company is claiming that their course could reduce the mean service time to 1.5 minutes - the distribution would still be exponential.

Assuming no training course:

(i) Determine the values of ?, µ and ?

(ii) Calculate queue length and waiting time including and excluding the service time

(iii) Calculate the probability of there being more than 2 customers waiting

(iv) Calculate the probability of there being more than 3 customers waiting

If the employee is sent on the training course and it is as effective as claimed recalculate as in part (a) above.

What are the costs and benefits of sending employees on the training course.
