Analysis of an Industry Sector
Learning Outcome 1: Critically analyse a sector of industry relevant to your industry/specialism on a global scale.
The Brief
Your brief is to produce a report that strategically analyses a sector of a National / global industry relevant to your own specialism and an organisation operating within it.
Step 1 Choose an industry
If you are employed then choose that industry. If you are a full-time student, choose an industry you would like to work in or is important to the country in which you intend to work.
Step 2 Research the industry.
An industry sector is probably best analysed using a PESTEL model and the Porter 5 forces model for both industry and organisation. What factors are influencing the industry right now? What are the main strategies of firms operating in the sector? Consider the size of market / market share and degree of turbulence.
Step 3 Research the organisation
A combination of the Resource Based View of the organisation and SWOT analysis may work best, but you can use other tools from the literature. What is their current strategy? You may wish to look at a segment of that organisation in an area in which it operates, rather than all of the business. How are they performing against competition? What else could they do to gain strategic competitive advantage?
Step 4 Consolidate your personal strategy
Where do you want to be in five years' time is often asked at interviews? This is an opportunity to explore your personal strategy. Determine your short personal strategy for the future.
Step 5 Produce a report
A high degree of critical analysis and reflection (not just description) is expected at MSc level. Your conclusions should relate to the industry and opportunities and the strategies used by firms to compete within it.
You are encouraged to use other techniques learnt on this module or other modules in this assignment.
