A substance microscopically dispersed evenly throughout another substance is known as colloid.

A colloidal system has two separate phases: a continuous phase (or dispersion medium) and a dispersed phase (or internal phase). A colloidal system may be gaseous, liquid and solid.

The dispersed-phase substances have a diameter of b/w approx 5 and 200 nanometers. These substances are generally invisible in an optical microscope, thus their presence may be confirmed using an electron microscope and an ultramicroscope. Homogeneous mixtures with a dispersed phase in same size range may be called colloidal emulsions, colloidal aerosols, colloidal foams, colloidal dispersions, or hydrosols. The droplets or dispersed-phase substances are affected largely by the surface chemistry present in the colloid.

Some other colloids are translucent due to the Tyndall effect, that is the scattering of light by particles in the colloid. Some other colloids may be opaque or they have a slight color.
