Starting of Wound-rotor Motors:

The simplest and cheapest method of starting wound-rotor induction motors is inserting the external resistance in the rotor circuit with full line voltage. The addition of resistance in the rotor circuit of a wound-rotor induction motor reduces the starting current, enhances the starting torque and improves the starting power factor. The external rotor resistance is arranged in steps which are slowly cut out during starting.
