Types of Operations Performed

First of all, manufacturing systems are distinguished via the types of operation they present. At the highest level, the distinction is among

(a) Processing operations on individual work units and

(b) Assembly operations to combine individual parts in assembled entities. The distinction is significant due to differences in machining tools, machine process, material handling system and another supporting system occupied.
