As the role of inflammation in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis becomes better understood, CRP has gained prominence as and important player in the assessment of cardiovascular risk. CRP has been shown to be an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular events in both apparently healthy individuals and in patients with established coronary heart disease.
