You are asked to analyse data from a large cross-sectional community survey conducted in a low income country in Asia which aimed to investigate factors associated with the risk of common mental disorders in women.
The study subjects are women aged between 18 and 50 years, living in one rural area. A total of 3200 women were randomly selected from population registers. From these 3200 women 82% participated in the study. The participants were interviewed face-to-face by trained interviewers. For this analysis the data are restricted to 1762 women whose marital status was "married/cohabitation". The primary outcome was the presence of a common mental disorder (an anxiety or depressive disorder), measured through a structured interview validated for diagnosis in community settings. Participant's lifetime experience of physical violence by their spouse was assessed. In addition, data on age, migrant status (non-migrant is defined as born and raised locally; migrant is defined as recently moved into area), years of education, household size, toilet access, family indebtedness, hunger in the past 4 months and reproductive history were obtained by interview.
The research question is "Does physical violence from her husband increase a woman's risk of common mental disorders"? And you are asked to investigate the data and try to answer this question in your report.
