Joe walked 2 1/2 miles to school, 1/3 mile to work, and 1 1/4 miles to his friend's house. How several miles did Joe walk altogether?

To find out the total distance walked, add the three distances together using a common denominator of 12; 2 6/12 + 4/12 +1 3 /12 = 3 / 13/12 which is simplified to 4 ½.
