Q. Explain Redundant Array of Independent Disks levels?

One such industrial standard that exists for multiple-disk database schemes is called as RAID which implies Redundant Array of Independent Disks. The fundamental aspects of RAID disks are:

  • Operating system considers physical disks as a single logical drive.
  • Data is distributed across physical disks.
  • In case of failure of a disk redundant information (E.g. parity bit) kept on redundant disks is used to recover data.

The term RAID was invented by researchers at University of Berkley. In their paper meaning of RAID was Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. But later the term Independent was adopted in place of Inexpensive to signify performance and reliability gains.

RAID has been proposed at different levels that are fundamentally aimed to cater for widening gap between processor and on-line secondary storage technology.
