- File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a TCP/IP client-server application for copying files from one host to another

-- Establishes two connections between client and server for efficiency; one for data transfer, the other for control information (commands and responses)

- -Control connection is maintained throughout entire process; data connection is only opened during data transfer.
