2. It should be capable of resisting penetration of water.

3. It should be cost effective.

4. It should be durable

5. It should be simply workable

6. It should be inert with other materials in contact

7. It should be capable of developing designed stresses

8. It should be set speedily to achieve speed in construction

9. The mortar joints should be strong and should not make cracks
