Blaise Pascal made the initial attempt in the direction of this automatic computing. He invented a apparatus, which comprised of lots of gears and chains and used to perform repeated subtractions and addition.  This device was termed as Pascaline.  Later many attempts were made in this direction. The innovation by Charles babbage, the grandfather of present day computer.
