1. Productivity is considered by many to be the essence of operations management - suggest reasons to support this assertion. 

2. Using the figures in the table, if we use 2000 as the base year, compute the productivity indices for 2001 then compare the rises and falls in productivity. Also express output/direct labour hour as a percentage increase/ decrease.
