Trichomonas vaginalis is also known as "Trichomoniasis" or "trich" for short term. It is a commonly sexually transmitted infection. It is an infection with a protozoan parasite. The parasite is passed from an infected person to a non-infected person during sexual intercourse. Trichomoniasis generally does not show symptoms but when there is, it can range from mild to severe irritation and inflammation. These symptoms can appear anywhere from the third day up until 28 days. In women, Trichomoniasis is isolated from the vagina, cervix, urethra, bladder, and the Bartholin and Skene glands. In men, the organism is found in the anterior, urethra, external genitalia, prostate, epididymis, and the semen. The danger for women that are baring child birth, they are more than likely to have an early delivery date with a low birth rate for the baby. Trichomoniasis can be cured with a prescription antibiotic medication. The antibiotic medication is an oral pill that will be used. It will cure Trichomoniasis for the time being, but it is recommended that there be a follow up and to repeat the medication again. It is very common for Trich to reoccur even after the initial treatment. The different kinds of tests that medical professionals are able to use in order to diagnose Trichomoniasis are cell cultures, antigen tests, samples of urine for men and samples of vaginal fluids for women. In order to do the best prevention for sexually transmitted infections, practicing safer sex, male and female condom use is highly recommended. Having no sexual intercourse until treatment is finished is also a very important thing to remember.
