Part A - Feedback Questionnaire

Part A of this assessment is a group task and requires teamwork with other students.

In collaboration with your team members, develop a list of questions that you can use to get more detailed information from the business stakeholders. These questions will be used to clarify the project requirements and to make sure that all possible web options are considered. The answers to these questions will confirm business-critical factors relating to the organisation.

Include both open and closed questions and present them as a questionnaire.

Present the feedback questionnaire to your facilitator who will act as your client and answer the questions. Submit the completed questionnaire (as filled in by your facilitator).

Students may use an online survey tool such as Google Forms (this can be integrated into your ePortfolio - see the tutorial provided - https://youtu.be/IqiXkGo6-AQ - Survey Monkey or a softcopy using a program of choice.

Write a brief report highlighting other data gathering techniques you could use to get more information about a new project and the associated business, business processes and stakeholders. Indicate where this fits into the systems development life cycle for developing web sites.

Case Study 1 - Organisation: Mean Jeans

Organisation profile

Mean Jeans is a new boutique shop that is about to open in the city centre. This is a single retail outlet and is not part of a franchise or chain of stores. The main products sold are men's and women's jeans.

The challenge of a single shop is to compete with the advertising power of other major retail outlets. The owner believes that a website and targeted localised advertising that directs people to the website is the most economical way to attract new customers.

Currently Mean Jeans has a documented business plan and an advertising strategy. They also have confirmed business-to-business contracts with clothing wholesalers. The owner can provide access to the wholesalers catalogues. In addition to the owner there is a store manager and a part- time accountant. They have not yet hired the sales assistants.

Once the store is operational there will be a single computerised POS (point of sale) cash management system. This will come with a touch screen, bar code scanner, credit card reader, cash drawer, receipt printer and inventory software.

Design brief

The owner wants you to design an online presence with the goal of attracting people to visit the shop and therefore increase sales and profits. The owner would like the ability to change text and images by him/herself using an internet connected laptop which will be in the store. Primary objectives are to advertise the location of the shop and the range of jeans/brands that they offer.

The style of the website should be attractive to the main customer demographic and follow the general graphical theme of the store.

Case Study 2 - Organisation: QwikQar Insurance

Organisation profile

QwikQar Insurance is a small car insurance company that offers car insurance in Australia.

This company prides itself on being able to give customers immediate insurance cover. They are a phone based company which allows 24hr access via a freephone number 1300-QWIKQAR (1300-7945727). The office and call centre is based in Bendigo, Victoria.

The challenge of this company is to compete with the big banks and other insurance companies that offer all types of insurance. These other insurance companies spend a lot on TV advertising that QwikQar cannot afford to compete with.

The owner believes that a website and targeted localised advertising (in car magazines etc.) will direct people to the website, and is the most economical way to attract new customers.

Currently QwikQar has a documented business plan and an advertising strategy. They also sponsor a V8 Supercar in the Australian V8 Supercars car racing category called "Team QwikQar" and have a proven track record.

The company has an owner, accountant, marketing director, telesales team leader and 8 full-time call centre staff. All staff have access to a call centre phone and up-to-date windows PCs that are networked and provide access to an insurance liability program. They can process credit card payments and each call centre member has a networked printer to print out letters to send to customers.

Design brief

The owner wants you to design an online presence with the goal of getting more people to phone the call centre to buy car insurance. This will hopefully increase profits. The owner would like the ability to change text and images by him/herself using the internet connected office computers. Primary objectives are to advertise the benefits of immediate insurance cover, the freephone number and 24hr access.

The style of the website should be attractive to the main customer demographic.

Case Study 3 - Organisation: Coffee Captain

Organisation profile

Coffee Captain is a takeaway coffee shop outside the main railway station that was established in 2011. This coffee shop has to compete with other well-known coffee chains that are located inside the railway station. To do this Coffee Captain claims to provide the cheapest and quickest fresh brewed coffee in the city. They have a limited menu of coffee (using a simple number system) and only one size of takeaway cup. At peak times they have three coffee machines staffed by six baristas for a fast turnaround.

The owner wants to start a franchise of this successful coffee shop, and therefore would like a website to show off the unique features of Coffee Captain and also the location of the stores.

Currently Coffee Captain has a documented business plan and a franchise strategy. In addition to the owner there are 2 shift managers and 7 part- time staff.

In the coffee shop there are 2 computerised POS (point of sale) cash registers. These have a touch screen, credit card reader, cash drawer and receipt printer.

The owner wants you to design an online presence with the goal of advertising the unique features of Coffee Captain to potential franchise holders. This will allow Coffee Captain to grow into a chain of coffee shops. The owner would like the ability to change text and images by him/herself using an internet connected laptop. Primary objectives are to advertise the unique features of this coffee shop and the location of the shops.

Case Study 4 - Organisation: Funkomputer

Organisation profile

Funkomputer is a small computer hardware company. This company builds custom-made computers for PC gaming enthusiasts and also sells fun/unusual computer accessories. They operate from a store in Bondi, NSW. They also process mail-orders and email-orders from their quarterly catalogue.

The challenge of the small shop is to expand the mail-order business to cover all of Australia, not just Sydney and NSW. The owner believes that a website, paid online adverts and sponsored Google results will attract new customers. The catalogue is also increasingly expensive to design and print.

Currently Funkomputer has a documented business plan and an advertising strategy. They also have business-to-business contracts with overseas hardware wholesalers. The owner can provide access to the wholesaler's catalogues. In addition to the owner there is a store manager and a part- time accountant. They have 3 computer technicians/sales assistants. They subcontract the design of the mail-order catalogue to another company.

In the store there are two computerised POS (point of sale) cash management systems. This comes with a touch screen, bar code scanner, credit card reader, cash drawer, receipt printer and inventory software.

The owner wants you to design an online presence with the goal of attracting people to the catalogue and use their mail-order system. This will hopefully increase profits. The owner would like the ability to change text and images by him/herself using an internet connected laptop which will be in the store. Other objectives are to advertise the location of the shop and the custom-built gamming computers that they build.

The style of the website should be attractive to the main customer demographic and follow the general theme of PC gaming.

There is currently no website however they plan to have a site that compliments their mail-order catalogue. In the future they plan to expand the site to offer an online application that will allow customers to select what components they want in their custom-built computer. Case Study 5 - Organisation: Expert Translate

Organisation profile

Expert Translate is a language translation company. Expert Translate is based in Japan and offers translation of business documents between many different languages including Japanese, Korean, English, Spanish and Mandarin.

Currently this company has a Japanese language website that is aimed at the Japanese corporate market and all of the work is conducted via email. The site has a free quoting service, where businesses can email them a document and they will respond within an hour with a quote. They plan to have a new site in English that will be aimed at the Australian market.

The challenge of this Japanese company is to offer services to Australian businesses without having an office in Australia. The owner believes that a website and targeted mail advertising that directs businesses to the website is the most economical way to attract new Australian customers.

Currently Expert Translate has a documented business plan and an advertising strategy. They also have business data on about the performance of their Japanese website. In addition to the owner there is a manager and an accountant. They employ freelance translators who get paid for each translation job.

Expert Translate already has a website hosting company, and each person in the team uses a company laptop.

Organisation profile

Black Tie Photography is a family owned business that does wedding and portrait photography. This photography business is based in Brisbane and provides services from Noosa in Queensland down to Byron Bay in NSW and as far west as Toowoomba.

Black Tie Photography gets all their business through business directories such as the Yellow Pages and local papers. In recent years they have seen a decline in business due to the competition of other photography companies who advertise on the web. The owners believe that customers are using the websites to find the style of photography that suits their occasion and not having a website is detrimental to their business.

Black Tie Photography has an established business plan, a monthly advertising strategy and a contract with a photographic printing lab. They have well documented records of previous clients, locations and types of occasions. The two owners are also the principal photographers. They employ a photographic assistant and a part-time make-up artist.

They use digital SLR cameras and each have a laptop with a DVD burner and use photo editing software.
