In this chapter the textbook covers a variety of interesting somatoform and dissociative disorders. For our discussion this week I would like to pay close attention to the diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Many of us have seen movies or read books like Sybil, The Bird’s Nest, Doctor Who and even Fight Club. These are dramatized versions of the diagnoses of Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD)(prior to 1994) or Dissociative Identity Disorder.
I would like you to share your thoughts on these controversial diagnoses. Do you believe they are legitimate diagnoses? Do you believe true dissociation can happen? How accurate do you think these movie and book representations are?
