The life cycle of the common mushroom is a process in which diploidnuclei exist for only a brief period. They are then quickly reducedby meiosis to a haploid state before the life cycle continues. Whatdoes this brief period as a diploid organism accomplish?

I have researched this all over the internet, I know how the lifecycle of a mushroom works.. but I have not a clue as to how toanswer this question.. could someone please help me? thank you somuch
