Your employer, TransEng Ltd has been retained by a large developer to advise on transportation-related issues relating to proposals to develop a new residential estate in Central London. The site is bound to the south and west by two major roads - Major Road EW and Major Road NS - respectively, as shown in Figure 1. Also shown in Figure 1 are details of current land use pattern at the site including location of residential, commercial and recreational areas. Vehicular traffic (2-way) on the two roads are 20,000 veh/day and 12,000 veh/day for EW and NS roads, respectively. The development of the proposals are for the part-demolition of existing access roads as well as residential, commercial and community buildings and redevelopment to make the area more pedestrian friendly and efficient for public transport thereby ensuring lower traffic congestion, traffic pollution and safety.
For the purposes of this assessment, it has been assumed that a total of 1500 residential units (Use Class 3) and 25000 m2 of commercial floorspace (Use Class B1) are to be accomodated on the site. The new development must comply with all relevant national, regional and local planning policies related to transport. Assume the area is located in an area with high public transport accessibilty.
Specifically, you are to provide an appraisal of the traffic and transportation issues associated with the development proposals including undertaking a multi-modal trip generation and impact assessment, proposing mitigation strategies and ensuring that the proposal reflects national, regional and local transport related planning policies and guidelines. The proposal should examine how the area could made more pedestrian friendly in particular and to consider sustainable mobility in general.
