f. Canola seeds required for farming (tonnes)

g. Fertilizer required for farming (tonnes)

h. Herbicides required for farming (tonnes)

i. Lime required for farming (tonnes)

j. Diesel required during farming stage (litres)

k. Grid electricity required for pumping of ground water (MWh)

I. Transportation during farming (e.g. seeds, fertilizer, herbicides, lime and diesel) (tkm)

m. Grid electricity required during conversion of canola to oil (MWh)

n. Methanol required for trans-esterification process (litres)

o. Potassium Hydroxide required as catalyst (kg)

p. Electricity required for trims-esterification process (MWh)

q. Diesel required during processing stage (litres)

r. Total electricity required during conversion of canola to mobs oil to biodiesel (MWh)

s. Transportation during processing stage (e.g. diesel, methanol and potassium hydroxide) (tkm)

Q3. Life cycle environment impacts (when electricity generation is using diesel)

Q4. Life cycle environment impacts (when electricity generation is using biodiesel)

Q5. Life cycle costing (when electricity generation is using diesel)

 a. Present Value (PV) of Shires life cycle income from the sale of electricity to public utilities and households ($)

b. Present Value (PV) of Shires life cycle expenses for both purchasing and the production of electricity ($) as below:

  • PV of cost of electricity generation
  • PV of payment to mining company for grid electricity
  • PV of salaries to staff
  • PV of maintenance cost

c. Net present .attic (income - expenses) ($)

Q6. Life cycle costing (when electricity generation is using biodiesel)

a. Present Value (PV) of Shires life cycle income from sale of electricity to public utilities and households ($)

b. Present Value (PV) of Shires life cycle income from sale of canola residue to live stock farm ($)

c. Capital cost of processing facility and farm machinery ($)

d. Present Value (PV) of Shires life cycle expenses for purchasing and production of electricity ($) as below:

  • PV of cost of electricity generation
  • PV of payment to mining company for grid electricity
  • PV of salaries to staff
  • PV of maintenance cost

e. Net present value (income - expenses) ($)

Part B-

Q7. Compare the total life cycle environmental impacts of both scenarios and identify the most environmentally friendly option (least environmental impacts).

Q8. Compare the total life cycle costing of both scenarios and identify the most economically viable option (option having highest net present value).

Q9. Identify a minimum of four life cycle social impacts associated with the production of electricity using diesel and biodiesel, and then compare the social advantages or disadvantages of these two options.

Q10. Identify two hotpots and suggest cleaner production strategies (CPS) for the electricity generation option which has the lowest environmental impacts

a. Identify hotspots during different stages and suggest one CPS for each of the hotspots which could potentially be introduced to mitigate the impacts without altering the performance/production output. The generation and consumption of grid electricity from mining company (for public utility and households) is beyond your scope and hence this grid electricity is not a valid hotspot and replacing it by renewable source is not a valid CPS.

b. Explain as to wily you have chosen these strategies. Your arguments must be supported through facts and figures (max 200 words using valid references).
