2- Case Study:

Happy Holidays! The holiday orders at Widgets, Doodads, and Thingies, Inc. have already begun to come in, and it looks like this will be a record quarter for the company. Overtime is mandatory for all employees. Unfortunately, it is also the start of the flu season! A number of employees have already been confined to their homes with the highly contagious bug, leaving everyone else, including you, to pick up the extra work.

One person, a personal friend and coworker, Clark Griswold, appears to be taking advantage of the flu epidemic. Clark called in yesterday and said he would be "out for the week" with the flu. You remember full well that Clark told you over lunch last month about the vacation to Wally World he was expecting to take with his family and cousin Eddie. Indeed, your recollection is that Clark's family flight to California is tomorrow night. In addition, when you went to Clark's desk to get some files you needed to complete some of his work, you found a flight itinerary showing a round trip flight to Los Angeles, California tomorrow. It is pretty apparent Clark does not have the flu!

Considering the situation, thoroughly answer the following questions:

1. What would you do?
2. Would you be inclined to "snitch" on Clark? Why or why not?

The Power that Leaders have

Mark Complete

Instructions:

Employees do as they are told...

Examples such as the Watergate break in and Nazi officers illustrate that people do what they are told

Milgram Experiment had teachers who were instructed to administer shocks to subjects

Shock intensity increased, and the subjects were uncomfortable, & the learners were uncomfortable

Although teachers questioned the test, their experimenter would say they had to continue, and 60% did continue

Many teachers wanted to stop, but they did not

Obedience to authority is observed at work

Leaders must realize the power they hold as legitimate authority figures at work

Therefore, authority figures must exhibit ethical behavior, and they must send powerful signals that high ethical standards are expected of everyone

When unethical behavior is uncovered, the investigation must consider the explicit or implicit messages sent by authority figures

The Zimbardo Prison Experiment is another example of people falling into a role because authority allowed them to.

For this discussion post, watch the two short YouTube videos below, and then use them to engage in a discussion of the ethics and power of leadership, and how we can ensure that it not be abused. Use your readings to back up your points.
