Part 1: Make connections to the stories.

Explain your reaction to each of the THREE stories: Junot Diaz's "Fiesta, 1980," Amy Tan's "Two Kinds," and Alice Walker's "Everyday Use":

For example, the following are two ways to make connections to a story.

• TEXT TO SELF- Ask yourself, "Does what I am reading or hearing about remind me of something I or my family have experienced? Can I identify with the characters' thoughts, actions, feelings, motivations, and so forth?"

• TEXT TO WORLD- Ask yourself, "Does what I am reading or hearing about remind me of something I know about from the real world, the news, or history?"

Part 2: Compare and contrast the consequences of being or not being obedient/respectful to your parents.

• Include at least two specific examples from each story such as a summary or quote.

• Cite page number after the summary or a quotation. Note that the period is after the parenthesis, e.g. He said, "They walked away'' (Tan 20).

OPTION 2

Parents often play an essential role in a piece of literature. Compare the families in Junot Diaz's "Fiesta, 1980," Amy Tan's "Two Kinds," and Alice Walker's "Everyday Use": How are their parents and children alike and how are they different? Possible criteria to compare are as follows: their appearance; feelings and emotions; attitudes toward other family members (show of love and respect), settings, events, and/or tradition.

Remember to provide two specific examples from each story. Use quotations and cite the sources - author's last name and page number e.g. (Tan 385). Essay format. Include a thesis statement.

Evaluation: a thoughtful, organized and well-developed essay showing that you understood the family relationships in each story. Proofread carefully. 350-450 words.
