The ß-hemoglobin locus in humans is implicated in resistance to falciparum malaria. Estimates of fitness vary geographically, but suppose that, in one particular area with endemic malaria, the relative fitnesses of genotypes involving the alleles A ("normal"), S (sickle) and C are:

genotype AA SS CC AS AC SC

rel fit 0.82 0.15 1.20 1.00 0.82 0.55

If in the population the frequencies of the three alleles are (i) pA=0.9000, pS=0.0500 and pC=0.0500 or (ii) pA=0.6000, pS=0.2000 and pC=0.2000, what would be the frequencies in the next generation? (Assume that the generations are separate and maintain 4 decimal places throughout your calculation). What do these results suggest about the final outcome of selection given these two different starting conditions (i and ii)?

Expected fitness of the b/b homozygote relative : Does this represent a significant section from the Hardy-Weinberg ratios? Further studies show that the absence of the A/A genotype is due to the lethal effect of the A allele when homozygous.
