At MIT, there is a winter-time student tradition of taking a large quantity (1 kg) of sodium metal and tossing it into the Charles river, where it explodes, gets tossed back into the air, falls again and explodes etc. over and over again until all the sodium is consumed. Assuming that the pressure was 1 atm (Cambridge is at sea level) and 10 °C (the Boston area is very cold), how much work was done. what gas is made when Na meets H2O?
