A 6 page visual analysis and research paper based on one japanese art work- flowers of four seasons ( made after 1500) that you examine first hand, in person, at the freer art of gallery, smithsonian institute ( washington dc)in the japanese collection galleries your observations of such characteristics as format, composition, style, technique, materials, formal relationships, pictorial devices and iconography should lead you to a series of critical questions about the art work. these should relate to such art historical issues and concerns as, for example, patronage, function, authorship, influence, quotation of past styles, etc. with your questions and observations about the object in mind, go to the library to find out more information. conduct your research using sources that relate to your object and help you to refine and answer your questions.

in your paper, describe what you see in lucid,precise, and vivid language. translate your observations into words as effectively as possible, and demonstrate that you have looked closely and thought carefully about the art object within framework of what you have learned so far in the course. incorporate the questions that the object raises for you into your analysis, suggesting possible interpretations or meanings. strive to be creative and daring in your thinking while also remaining faithful to the visual and material evidence of the artwork as well as the information learned from your research.

the final paper should be 6 double spaced pages of text plus illustrations, footnotes and bibliography. consult at least 6 scholarly sources. all sources should be properly cited and documented.
