The wood specimen is to be loaded in a testing machine until it fails in tension. The ultimate normal strength of the wood is ?ult = 1800 psi and the ultimate shear strength of the wood is fault = 800 psi. The width of the specimen under tension is b = 1.7 in, and the specimen is 1.0 in thick. Determine the minimum required dimension for t so that a factor of safety of 1.10 is maintained against a shear failure in the grips when the specimen fails in tension. Express your answer in inches to the nearest 1/4 in.
