Climate change has largely been regarded as an important factor affecting major ecosystems around the world. Interestingly, different types of shellfish are affected in very different ways by the phenomenon. Mollusks such as oysters can be severely damaged by the affects of climate change on ocean pH. In particular, it appears that increased acidification of ocean waters leads to a severe corrosion of the organism's CaCO3 shell. However, crustaceans such as lobsters build stronger thicker CaCO3 shells under identical conditions. Lobsters appear to be able to utilize CO3 directly to form their shells while oysters cannot.
