A simply supported compression member consists of a standard structural steel cross-section. Because of the lower bending stiffness in one plane compared to the other for most standard cross-sections, such a member would tend to fail by buckling in the weaker direction. One strategy of raising the buckling load is to constrain the lateral motion at the center of the member-the beam then has a buckling load that corresponds to a member that is half as long. Say that the lateral motion is constrained only in the weaker direction. Consider how much this strategy raises the buckling load for two cross-sections:
(a) a wide-flange section W6 x 25 and
(b) a standard channel section C9 x 15. For each section, compute the ratio of the constrained buckling load to the unconstrained buckling load. Also, for each section, specify whether the plane of buckling changes when the constraint is added. (See Appendix E.)
A chalk core plug having a pore volume of 17.0307 cm3 is fully saturated with reservoir brine. A synthetic oil flood is conducted on this plug. It is found that 12.25 cm3 of reservoir brine was displaced from this plug by the synthetic oil.
The concrete post (Ec=3.6*10^6 psi and Ac= 5.5*10^-6/degrees F) is reinforced with six steel bars. each of 7/8-in diameter (Es=29*10^6 psi and As=6.5*10-6/ degrees F).
An open vat in a food processing plant contains 400L of water at 20 degrees C and atmospheric pressure. If the water is heated to 80 degrees C, what will be the percentage change in its volume? If the vat has a diameter of 3m

A sewer pipe is to be laid at a slope of 1 in 1800 to carry a maximum discharge of 600 liters/s, when the depth of water is 75% of the vertical diameter. Find the diameter of the pipe. Use manning's formula and take n=0.025.
A proposed earthen dam will contain 5,000,000 cubic meters of earth. Soil to be taken from a borrow pit will be compacted to a void ratio of 0.78. The void ratio of soil in the borrow pit is 1.12. Estimate the volume of soil (cubic meters) that mu..

Two pumping wells 1,000 m away fully penetrate the same confined aquifer. One of the wells pumps at a rate of 1240 m3/ day and the second well pumps at 850 m3/ day.
You try to freeze one liter of water at 10 degrees Celsius in ice trays in your freezer. Your freezer has a coefficient of performance of 5.5 and a power rating of 550 Watts, though only 10% of the power will go into freezing the ice.
Knowing a .02 in gap exists when the temperature is 75 degrees F, determine(a) the temperature at which the normal stress in the aluminum bar will be equal to -11ksi, (b) the corresponding exact length of the aluminum bar.
