Question:
Analyze the experiences of late nineteenth century Americans to support or refute the idea of a shared American Experience, citing specific examples from the following documents, your textbook, class lectures, and/or documentaries to support your position.
Some of the questions to consider are: What is the perspective of each author?
How does the author's identity influence their perspective? Is there evidence of a bias? How does this document reflect the ideologies of its time period? For instance, does it seem "normal" for the context or is it "rebellious" or "abnormal?"
Do the ideas presented within the documents align with what you have read in the textbook? What different viewpoints do the articles reveal regarding American society and culture?
Are there commonalities in the experiences of these individuals ? Do these experiences reflect the modern American experience?
You do not need to answer any or all of these specifically, but they might help give you ideas of what to write. Your response should reference the documents themselves, but do not simply quote large sections to occupy space. Your answer should reflect that you read each of the documents and the textbook.

Writing Assignment:
The last half of the nineteenth century was a time of great change in America. New technologies, new businesses, new cities, and new immigrants created a confluence of change that reworked the social and political fabric of America. Throughout the Gilded Age and beyond more and more individuals were carving out their own version of the American Dream and creating their own definition of citizenship.
Despite the obvious diversity of experiences in the late nineteenth century, many historians and other individuals argue
that these experiences shared commonalities that are the foundation of a shared, or common, American Experience that binds us together regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or socio-economic standing.
This essay will examine some of the thoughts and experiences of various people that lived in America during this era. Use the following collection of primary sources composed of excerpts, letters, articles, and interviews, to answer the question below.
