Assume that you have graduated from Deakin University and have been short-listed for a graduate position in Virgin Australia or BHP. For the next stage of the position selection process, you have been asked to provide a report on that organisation which addresses the following:
1. Describe the purpose of this organisation, its mission and size, profit/not-for-profit orientation, and locations.
2. Describe any three external environmental factors/conditions relevant to this organisation in the current Trimester period. Analyse the impact of these factors on the organisation and how the organisation could deal with these factors.
3. Identify and justify the three most important dimensions of organisational culture to which this organisation should aspire (see pp. 42-44 and Figure 2.3 of the textbook to guide your discussion). Discuss which kind of organisational culture best matches your personal preference as evidenced by your results of the personal insights quiz (in Chapter 2). In your discussion, critically analyse and evaluate what managers in this organisation would need to do to change and sustain the organisational culture that meets your preferences.
4. Discuss and evaluate the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ethics of this organisation with reference to theories on pp.52-59 of the textbook.
Other instructions:
(i) You can use the publicly available information on this organisation. Note: as the organisation wants to hire independent thinkers, it is keen to receive constructive criticism.
(ii) Use ‘personal insight' (in Chapter 2, pp. 46-47 of textbook) to examine the fit between your preferences and this organisation.
(iii) Present your findings in a written report format (see the Table below)
Other requirements:
a) You are required to cite at least one academic journal article to examine each question from 1-4 of the assignment (a minimum of four journal articles). These academic journal articles are available from the Deakin University Library online databases available to Deakin College students. Go to the following website to access available resources: deakin.edu.au/library/study/deakin-college.
b) In addition to four journal articles above, you can cite other academic references such as books and book chapters. You can also cite relevant industry or organisational reports of your chosen organisation.
c) You can use appropriate publicly available information about the organisation, including its website.
d) Note that Wikipedia, answers.com, general websites and your or other personal opinions or social networking websites are NOT accepted. Assignments that cite these websites will be penalised.
e) Note that lecture slides are NOT counted as an academic reference. You need to track down the original sources to cite.
f) All references referred to in text must be placed in your reference list, and are correctly formatted using the Harvard referencing style. All items in the reference list must be cited in the body of the report.
