Mean Deviation of a set of values is the AM of absolute deviations when deviations are taken from an average A. (usually mean, median or mode)

Ungrouped data: [f x₁, x₂........x_n are the values of a variable then    

MD = 1/n Σ |X_i - A|

Grouped data: If x₁, x₂, .......... x_n are the values of a variable with frequencies f₁, f₂, .............f_n then

        MD = 1/N  Σ  f_i|X_i - A|

 

where A may be mean or median or mode:

                co-efficient of MD = MD/A
