From its origins in the 1960s, Flinders University is different, to be innovative and to draw in staff and students attracted to new ideas. Nowadays, Flinders University is a high quality institution delivering excellence in teaching and research, having reputation for friendly and approachable staff, and with the main campus located in an attractive natural environment in southern metropolitan Adelaide.
Flinders is committed to engagement with the community it serves, in offering a world class education for students and in enhancing educational opportunities for students from communities with low university participation rates. Whilst Flinders is strongly committed to South Australia, the university has enlarged its activities in the Northern Territory in partnership with Charles Darwin University.
Offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in 14 schools across four Faculties, Flinders has above 2,000 staff and around 18,800 students. Flinders also has on- campus accommodation for over 500 students. The University satisfied by itself on the quality of the courses it has developed, the concentration given to the learning experience of the students, the helping services that are available and the commitment of staff.
While there is a strong focus on regular direct contact between staff and students, several courses use the latest information and communication technologies to supplement face-to-face teaching and provide flexible options. Flinders was recognized for individual and team awards through the Australian Awards for University Teaching from 2006-2011, and was winner of the University Teacher of the Year Award in 2004 and 2006.
In the year 2011 the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Ranking of World Universities places Flinders equal tenth in Australia, in the top 68 universities in the Asia- Pacific region, and in the top 400 universities in the world.
Flinders has grouped its research initiatives under five broad themes: Culture, Policy & Society; Health & Human Behavior; Molecular Science & Technology; Biomedical & Clinical Sciences; and Water & Environment. Surrounded by these themes there are a number of institutes, National and State Centers.
The University accepted its first intake into the Northern Territory Medical Program in the year 2011. For the first time, students in the NT are able to complete their medical training without leaving the Territory. Included the 10 Indigenous students, who along with the Indigenous students in the Adelaide intake have given Flinders the highest ever single intake of Indigenous students to any Australian medical course.
Flinders has a prominent international profile and now has more than 3,500 onshore and offshore international students from more than 100 countries. Specifically it is the only university to be approved to offer three courses with a Chinese university – Nankai University.
With its base in Adelaide, Flinders University has a physical presence in various regions of Western Victoria South Australia, and the Northern Territory. The University’s actions in these regional areas support the educational programs and students, specifically in nursing medicine, and other health professions, teacher education, environmental management, tourism, marine science, archaeology, teacher education, and aquaculture.
