Founded by Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville. It’s referred as Mr. Jefferson’s University or simply The University. Only the first year students are to live on the campus, and a number of upperclassmen live in off-campus apartments or fraternity and sorority houses. The Greek life is prominent at UVA with a membership which includes about 30 percent of the student body. The Cavaliers, are unofficially known as Wahoos or ‘Hoos, are the members of NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference and are known for their sustained dominant men’s and women’s lacrosse teams.
UVA’s graduate programs include the highly ranked Darden Graduate School of Business and Administration, The Curry School of Education, School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Medicine and School of Law. UVA houses one of the 25 left over original copies of the Declaration of Independence, called as a Dunlap Broadside, in its Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library. The school has its own distinct lingo as well: The campus is referred to as the "grounds," the central quad is known as "lawn," and students are either a first, second, third, or fourth year. The well known alumni are former U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, former NFL player Tiki Barber national news anchor Katie Couric, earned degrees from UVA. The famous writer Edgar Allen Poe was enforced to leave the school after losing his tuition money in gambling, however his dorm room on the lawn is still preserved and is on display for the visitors.
