History
•In the year 1858 John Ruskin opened the School of Art in Cambridge, laying foundation for the institution which grew further to become Anglia Ruskin University.
•In the year 1989 The Essex Institute of Higher Education and Cambridgeshire College of Arts & Technology came jointly to form a polytechnic.
Location and transport
•Cambridge is just an hour from London, by train, and can be reached by means of the M11.
•Chelmsford provides fast access to London, just 30 minutes by train, and good road connections to the whole of UK.
Entry standards
•Professional courses like Initial Teacher Training and Midwifery have capped numbers and fill up rapidly.
•Applicants who are unsuccessful when applying for a place on an honours degree may be offered a place on a foundation degree.

•The ratio of men and women is 35:65.

Research standards
•The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) of Government in the year 2008 results for higher education institutions showed that research at the ARU is increasing in scope. Anglia Ruskin was the top-rated university for Physchology, second for English and third for History.
•The RAE measures departmental success in terms of publications, the research environment and academic esteem – 30% of our submissions were rated as 'internationally excellent' or 'world-leading'. Eight submissions had a proportion of their work rated as 'world-leading': Allied Health Professions & Studies; Art & Design; English Language & Literature; Geography & Environmental Studies; History; Music; Psychology; Social Work, Social Policy & Administration.
•Anglia Ruskin's five research institutes are: Childhood and Youth Research Institute; Cultures of the Digital Economy; Global Sustainability Institute; Institute for International Management Practice and the Postgraduate Medical Institute.
Academic strengths
•The National Student Survey (NSS) 2011 showed that many students are delighted with their experience at Anglia Ruskin, 100% of students were satisfied in: Child Nursing in Chelmsford; Civil Engineering; History; Mental Health Nursing in Chelmsford; Ophthalmic Dispensing and Optometry.
•The following courses achieved more than 90% satisfaction: Audio and Music Technology; Business Economics; Criminology; Early Years Childcare and Education; Fashion Design; Building Surveying; Graphic Design; English Literature Photography; Law; Healthcare Associate Practitioner; Hearing Aid Audiology; Illustration; Quantity Surveying and Tourism Management.
•The Vision & Eye Unit has made great developments in many areas of vision and ophthalmology research including burden of global eye disease, myopia, glaucoma, anterior eye diseases, low vision, children’s vision, learning difficulties and visual short term memory. This has been aided through working closely with the consultant Ophthalmologists from Adddenbrrokes, Moorfields and Hinchinbrooke, Eye hospitals as well with the optometrists, computing engineers, psychologists, and life scientists within Anglia Ruskin University.
