Researched Argument Essay
Definition: A research paper is a compilation and interpretation of factual materials and of critics' opinions on a specific subject. Since the selection of materials is filtered and processed by the writer, the paper reflects the author's views also; hence, it is both objective and subjective in content. Your ultimate goal is to convince your reader of an argument that you have devised from your research in a paper that integrates the skills of summary, problematization, evaluation, analysis, and argument. The paper should include a considered thesis or claim based on the evidence examined, and carefully demonstrate the complexity of the research issue. Keep in mind the fact that a thesis or claim need not establish absolute truth or certainty. It is often better for your thesis/claim to show the complexity of an issue than to close down possibility with an oversimplified assertion.
Process
By the time you begin your essay, you should already have completed a proposal and annotated bibliography to help guide your writing process.
Write a tentative thesis to establish your purpose for your writing about the research you've gathered. This is what you are trying to support and/or prove, and your research should have guided you to this point. It may be a necessity to perform more research as you continue to write, and you may need to refine your thesis statement. A tentative thesis does not ultimately need to be as specific as it may become; it may be beneficial to start writing with only part of your argument fully formed.
Use your notes on sources. Hopefully you've taken detailed notes in preparation for your bibliography, as that will provide you with both factual information from sources and your own opinions/responses on them. This could potentially provide the bulk of your paper if done correctly. Work on expanding those short analyses in the bibliography for your preliminary drafts.
You may find it helpful to first make an outline using the information assembled from your notes, before you write a rough draft, then inserting parenthetical MLA/APA citations within the text.
Proofread and then write the final copy. Your introduction/conclusion should be the last thing finalized, as they often need to change during the writing process.
