When there are branches in either the acid or the alcohol, how do you name the ester formed from the reaction of these two? For example, what would the ester formed from butan-2-ol and benzoic acid be called? Also, what would the ester formed from ethanol and say, 2-ethyl-3-methylpentanoic acid? (I made these reactants up to illustrate what I mean by my question). Or if both the alcohol and acid have branches. For instance, what would the ester formed from 3-methylbutan-2-ol and 2-ethyl-3-methylpentanoic acid be called?
