Ethical Situations

Situation 1 - Joe is a recovering cocaine addict who works at Pinetop Lodge, a large, long-term treatment program that is staffed largely by graduates of this therapeutic community. Joe attends Narcotics Anonymous to maintain and strengthen his own recovery from addiction. At one meeting, a young woman named Joanna made a comment, in which she shared the difficulty that she was having in staying drug-free. Joanna happens to be a court-mandated client at the outpatient department of Pinetop Lodge, and Joe knows that she did not share these minor relapses with the staff. As an NA member, Joe would never carry that information outside of the meeting, but as a counselor, he would notify his agency and then the court. What would your advice be to Joe?

Situation 2 - Marcia, who comes from a Hasidic Jewish family, rebelled to marry a secular Jewish man and entered treatment under family pressure. She went to a few AA meetings at the urging of her counselor, but she felt that she was being forced to go along with something that she considered too similar to her repressive family environment. She refers to the group as "another dogmatic in-group who only talk to themselves." She strongly declared her desire to recover from her alcoholism, but she does not want to be forced to go along with "the God thing." How would you work with Marcia?

Situation 3 - Your 28-year-old client, a married man, discontinued treatment. He confided that he had anonymous encounters with other men and had contracted an STD. His family was ardently anti-gay. Then, you read in the newspaper that he committed suicide. His grief-stricken father called you and requested any information that would help the family understand why his son killed himself. The family wondered what factors contributed to his death and if they were responsible in any way. Your memories and notes clearly show that his suicide was related to factors over which they had no control. What do you do?
