Calculating FTEs

To develop a master staffing pattern, a nurse manager must determine how many hours of nursing care are required based upon available patient classification system information. Once the hours of required nursing care are determined, the number of full-time equivalents (FTEs) can be calculated. One full-time equivalent is equal to 40 hours per week, 80 hours per 2-week pay period, or 2080 hours per year.

1. Based on the information provided in the table, calculate the FTEs required for a 2-week schedule.

2. If this unit uses an average of 3 hours per FTE of vacation time and 2 hours per FTE of sick time per pay period, what will be the actual FTEs needed for RNs, LPNs, and unlicensed assistive personnel for the first two weeks of March?
