The ALDH gene has two primary alleles. The dominant D allele results in production of nonfunctional ALDH enzyme. This results in a build-up of acetaldehyde and a flush reaction when an individual consumes alcohol. The recessive d allele results in production of a functional ALDH enzyme and lack of a flush reaction. First, we are interested in the presence or absence of the flush reaction phenotype.
1. Jasmine and her mother both get a flush reaction when they drink alcohol. Jasmine's father does not. Jasmine's husband, Jake, does not get a flush reaction, but his mother and father both do.
a. Draw a pedigree of Jasmine, Jake, and their parents. Label each individual with his/her genotype.
b. What genotypic ratio is expected among Jasmine and Jake's kids? Show your work with a Punnett square.
c. What proportion of Jasmine and Jake's kids are expected to exhibit the flush reaction? Explain.
Phenylketonuria-Individuals with this disorder are unable to produce the enzyme responsible for the conversion of the amino acid phenylalanine to the amino acid tyrosine.
Autophagy is negatively regulated by a complex called mTorc1. When researchers inhibited mTORC1 , the genes related to autophagy(ATGs) were not expressed. What does this suggest about the regulation of ATG expression?
In wild petunias, the allele for red flower color ( R ) is dominant over the allele for white flower color ( r ). We sample a population and find 225 plants have white flowers and seventy-five have red flowers.
Arrange the following plants as to their complexity and explain your answer: angiosperms, viruses, bacteria, gymnosperms, ferns, mosses, algae, fungi?
Suppose you were given ten ml of milk. You added 0.5 ml of the milk to 9.5 ml of sterile water. After mixing, one ml of the diluted milk was added to 99 ml of sterile water.
Results of this analysis show that one of the most rapidly reassociating classes of DNA is substantially reduced in the older individual with respect to the 2 year-old. How can you describe this finding.
In prokaryotic genome replication and cell division a battery of enzymes copies the DNA of each strand until the entire circle is copied. After the genome has been replicated.
