Imagine that the force of gravity has been turned off, and we wish to keep the Moon in its current orbit around the Earth, using the electrostatic (Coulomb) interaction. Inother words, we are imagining that instead of gravity holding theMoon in its orbit, the force is electricity. How much charge do youneed to place on the Moon in the form of electrons (with anidentical amount in the form of protons on the Earth) if you are to provide the same centripetal acceleration that currently exists. (Again, you want an equivalent electrical forcethat is currently being provided by gravity.) Compare with the mass of yourbody. Are you surprised by this answer? The electrostatic force is STRONG, man!! (or woman!!!) (Youwill have to look up the mass of the Moon and Earth to find whatthe actual gravitational force is....)
