Assessable Coursework

The unit will be assessed through a single individual coursework which carries a 100% weighting. The coursework requires students to write 5000 wordssubmission which answers questions stated in the assignment. Each of these 4 questions are weighted and graded as stipulated in the assignment brief below.

Assessment Details

The assignment is based on innovation within existing organisations and students understanding and appreciation of innovation and its theories, concepts, and values. The assignment deals with the topics covered in the unit, and effectively relates to the ILOs for the unit. Students are expected to answer all 4 questions with a total weighting of 100%.

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

1. Rationale
This assignment provides students with the opportunity to develop an innovative product for an existing firm. To do this, students should have developed skills in managing different context of innovation in the organizational environment as stated in the intended learning outcomes. Understanding how to manage different context of innovation is an important step to become effective managers or entrepreneurs in today's ever changing business world.

2. The learning outcomes being assessed include to:

1. Critically evaluate (a critical appreciation of) a range of concepts and theories on innovation and an ability to relate this to practice;
2. Demonstrate ability to approach and analyse innovation process using relevant concepts and theories in different contexts (operational innovation, product innovation, strategy innovation, and management innovation)
3. Demonstrate ability to analyse and evaluate the required management skills for different contexts of innovation processes in the business environment;
4. Demonstrate critical thinking in managing innovation through evaluating the innovation process of existing business

3. Overview of assignment

The assignment should be written in the form of a report and it must provide answers to questions asked concerning innovation in an existing organisation.The assignment questions are:
1. Pick an existing organisation and evaluate its current strategy with respect to innovation

2. Suggest an innovative product or process for your chosen organisation; this could include creating a new product or finding a creative way to change an existing product or service or the way it is delivered to customers

3. What are its existing resources and capabilities? Which of these existing resources and capabilities or (where applicable and if any) new resources and capabilities would be needed for this new product or process, and how can these be acquired

4. Provide justifications on how your suggested innovation adds value to the business for achieving sustainable competitive advantage. What would be some of the critical success factors that would determine how successful your innovation would be?
