The wearing parts of a coal mining machine are made of hardened tool steel, but are rarely, if ever, lubricated. The left and right wear plates for a typical tracked vehicle measure 48" long by 6" wide, and each tests at 360 HB. The vehicle weighs 10 tons. How far can it travel underground before each wear plate is reduced in thickness by 1/8"?
