Case Study : The Problems of Multitasking at the end of Chapter 12 in your textbook. Read the case and then proceed to prepare your report.
This case deals with the relationship between project scheduling and resource availability. Many firms are “lean” and require employees to work in different projects at the same time. This multitasking can lead to over-commitment. This can also lead to difficulty in scheduling to determine the resources needed for a project.
Assume you are a project management trainer who has been asked to present and lead a session about multitasking and the problems that can arise with multitasking. Prepare a report to present to your class of PM students about this case. Your report should be approximately 1-2 pages in length, not including the cover page and references page, and should be written in APA style. In addition to your textbook, you may need to use additional outside resources. Your report should address the following points and questions:
Briefly summarize the situation in the case.
Explain how multitasking can create confusion in project team personnel availability.
How does multitasking or assigning employees to participate in several projects contaminate activity duration?
Why does multitasking “decouple” activity duration estimates from the project schedule?
“In modern organizations, it is impossible to eliminate multitasking for the average employee.” Do you agree or disagree? Explain your position.
