Overview:  This assignment is an "open-ended" research assignment. As such, we hope you will pick a topic that is particularly interesting to you and present your work in a format that you will enjoy working on.

The assignment is about "picking a geologic event related to a type of hazard that is covered in the GLG 112 course to research further and you will then present your findings to your instructor. You must pick an actual event (i.e. the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the 1993 Mississippi River floods, the 1925 Gros Ventre landslide, etc.)" You will need to present ALL of the following information to receive full credit for this assignment:

  1. Name and describe your topic. What is it, when did it happen, and where did it take place? You must include a map or visual representation of where it occurred.
  2. How and why did it occur? What is the science behind it? Why did it happen? Was this a specific hazard related to just one location or does it occur elsewhere? Had it happened before or was it completely unexpected?
  3. Who was affected? Who was impacted by this event and how? What sort of problems did this present?
  4. What can be done about this type of event/hazard? How do people attempt to mitigate the risks associated with this type of hazard?
  5. What sources did you use? You must include a list of references (a minimum of two unique sources are required).
