Selector's Qualifications. When evaluating literature for inclusion in school media centers, it is important to make informed selections. Explore the book review sites provided on pages 81-82 (attachment provided) of your text. Make two children's (elementary level k-5th) literature selections (be sure to cite them) from these sources or from one that you identified from this week's guidance. You will not be critiquing the actual book review sites; you are only using them as tools to identify your two book selections. Your 3-4 page paper will:
· Provide a summary (in your own words) of each book selection and a target audience.
· Evaluate each title using the Selector's Qualifications described on page 82 of your text.
1. Is the book appropriate for this stage of the child's development (biopsychosocial characteristics)?
2. Does the book match the cultural context of the children for whom you are making this choice? (Consider range of intelligences, diversity, socioeconomic status, reading levels, and emotional maturity)
3. Is the match between the story and the readers appropriate? (Consider if the kids will understand, enjoy, find comfort, see themselves, etc in the story)
4. Discuss your conclusions with other educators or experts in the field.
· Draw a conclusion regarding the appropriateness of your choices for your purpose (i.e. efferent/aesthetic) and targeted audience.
